For the assessment of the load-bearing capacity of the structure and any potential collapse mechanism and for the verification of evacuation conditions for the occupants, the performance-based fire safety engineering (FSE) method was used.
Various fire scenarios were defined, anticipating a fire inside a carriage during maintenance work in different positions within the buildings. Using literature data and real-scale studies, the fire curve of the carriage was defined, and evacuation times for each scenario were determined after a precise assessment of the state and various tasks of the occupants within the building. The fire was then simulated using the FDS calculation code.
Regarding the load-bearing capacity of the structure, the temperature curves acting on the load-bearing elements were defined, and the maintenance of the structure’s load-bearing capacity was verified for the entire period necessary for the evacuation of the occupants.
